About BetterMinds

Technology should help a person
carry more of themselves.

BetterMinds began with a simple burden: when life, health and care become complex, the person is too often asked to become the filing system, narrator and continuity layer all at once.

The burden was not only living through it. It was having to reconstruct the thread each time help changed hands.

The founding insight, not a clinical claim

The origin

A person-owned companion and champion, inspired by lived experience.

Gareth Squance has lived experience of complex medical conditions, therapy and fragmented care, alongside years spent refining practical, human-centred AI systems. The repeated work of rebuilding context helped inspire Ren: a companion designed to make the person’s own story easier to understand, hold and present when it matters.

Lived experience can reveal a real problem and shape a humane principle. It does not prove a clinical outcome, and BetterMinds will never present it as one.

Gareth Squance

Gareth combines lived experience, 15 years in policing and hands-on work with practical AI systems. His product question is grounded in consequence: does the technology strengthen dignity and agency, or quietly reduce the person to data?

Kainne Clements

Kainne’s experience spans safety systems, enterprise and widening access. He brings the discipline of turning an idea into a dependable organisation while holding commercial reality, regulation, participation and trust in the same frame.

Kainne’s product principle

Support should be honest enough to challenge and humble enough to leave judgement with people.

That is what “champions, not flatters” means in product terms. Ren can reflect when a person’s current direction appears to pull against an aim they set. It does not moralise, manufacture certainty or claim authority it does not have.

How we intend to build

Warmth with a backbone.

01

Person before profile

A person is more than the signals available about them.

02

Clarity before cleverness

Readable language and honest limits matter more than impressive-sounding AI.

03

Consent that changes the product

Choice should be visible in memory, sharing, connected context and organisational design.

04

People remain accountable

Technology can prepare and support. Human professionals keep judgement and responsibility.

An open door

This is early work, built in the open about its limits.

If the mission resonates, or if a boundary worries you, we would rather begin with a thoughtful conversation than a polished assumption.
